Gardens By Budget

We understand that price can be a significant factor in your edible gardening decision. We believe all money spent on an edible garden is priceless and there is nothing more valuable than growing your own food.

We also recommend you consider other benefits like the knowing exactly how your food is grown, spending relaxing time outdoors in nature with your garden, getting your family involved and your kids to love eating their vegetables, and the long term benefits to your health and well being.

When it comes to budgeting, we’ve put together a couple different gardening scenarios at various price points to help you with your decision making process. These examples are designed to optimize the all-around experience in terms of yields, maintenance time, and aesthetics.

These garden examples look at just the startup costs to get a garden planted. The cost of labour in terms of garden upkeep (watering, weeding, harvesting) and additional accessories aren’t included unless specified in the details. Your individual circumstances will probably be different when it comes to gardening experience, choice of vegetables, eating preferences, etc.

Good sun conditions (6+ hours per day) and average soil conditions are assumed. You’ll notice the tabs below that highlight various examples. Click on all the them to get more details on the various price points and garden examples.

Entry Level Gardens <$435

Who We Recommend This For: This is an excellent garden for anyone who wants to get started quickly and easily. It’s perfect for those with a small space such as condo/apartment balconies and fits just as well in larger spaces like backyard decks, patios, rooftop terraces, and even along a sunny driveway.

What’s Included: For an entry level garden, this setup includes two (2) EarthBox Organic Garden Kits, high quality potting soil, and transplants according to the planting guide. It produces exceptional yields with minimal effort and minimal maintenance time.

Advantages: We love EarthBoxes because they are functional and durable. They can last over 10 years of regular use, being left outdoors in the winter and being blasted by the UV rays of the sun in the summer. EarthBoxes require minimal time watering due to its self-watering nature and built in 2 gallon reservoir essentially allowing you to just water and harvest.

Considerations: It would be very difficult for things to go wrong with a couple of EarthBoxes. They can grow most crops with ease, although root vegetables, squash plants (both summer and winter varieties), and larger plants like trees and shrubs are not the most suitable for these boxes.

Unless space is a major constraint, we find many of our customers add additional boxes to fit the space they have available.

Add-Ons: If you have a bit more to spend, you can add on a staking system for tomatoes or cucumbers, a garden stand to raise the height of the box, or even an Automatic Watering System to keep the boxes watered even if you go away for part of the summer.

Sample Planting A: Box 1 for mixed herbs including basil x2, parsley, rosemary, thyme and chives. Box 2 for kale x3, Swiss chard  x3.

Sample Planting B: Box 1 with 3x spicy peppers, 3x sweet peppers. Box 2 with strawberries x6

Sample Planting C: Box 1 with eggplant x2. Box 2 with bush beans x 16.

Cost Breakdown:
2x EarthBox Organic Garden Kit @ $75 each
Potting Soil and Transplants @ $20 each
Total Cost: $190 + HST

Who We Recommend This For: This garden is perfect for those with a sunny area and a goal of maximizing yields per square foot. It is designed for homeowners, businesses, and even restaurants to grow bountiful tomatoes, delicious root vegetables, fragrant herbs, and more.

What’s Included: This entry level in-ground garden includes 1 cubic yard of our YUF Custom Soil Blend along with a variety of seeds and transplants.

Advantages: In-ground gardens can be challenging to setup, especially with a wide range of soil profiles in the GTA. With a large volume of soil, you don’t have to worry as much about existing  soil conditions, as our custom soil blend is full or organic matter that improves soil structure for both sandy and clay-based soil.

For optimal short- and long-term results, improving the soil is the most effective way to grow great veg which is why the majority of the costs are put towards improving the soil structure.

In-ground gardens are great because there is almost limitless flexibility when it comes to the orientation and layout of the garden beds. The value when it comes to cost/yields per square foot is very good, especially if you like growing root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, turnips, garlic and leeks.

Considerations: This garden example does not include the cost of labour, which can potentially double the cost or translate into you spending a weekend getting everything setup. This plan also assumes having a plan in terms of what you want to grow, how to layout the garden, and having adequate tools like shovels, garden forks, rakes, and shears.

Finally, if you plan on moving in the short term, you can’t take the garden with you when you move (although you can use it as a selling feature).

Other Details: Coverage of one cubic yard of soil vary based on the area being planted. For example, a 100 square foot garden with have an extra 3 inches of soil added while a 200 square foot garden only receive an extra 1.5 inches of soil.

Add-Ons: If you have a bit more to spend, we recommend ordering additional transplants for the garden, investing in garden structures like a trellis or tomato spirals, or getting help with the labour in setting up the garden. Depending on available space, there is an almost endless number of other add-ons including compost bins, cold frames, irrigation tools, and more.

Cost Breakdown
Cubic yard of YUF Custom Soil Blend $235
Seeds/plants $40-60
Total Cost: $285

Who We Recommend This For: Raised beds are great for anyone with a flat outdoor surface like a front or back yard, patio, or even driveway. Raised beds allow you to get an instant garden with excellent yields per square foot and minimal maintenance including weeding, interference from harmful pests, and easy harvesting.

What’s Included: Raised Beds start at $435 for a single 4′ x 4′ bed @ 8″ tall. The bed includes all materials, soil, setup, and an initial round of planting.

Advantages: Raised beds are great for those who want an easy to get started while growing a large bounty of produce. On a square foot basis, they are generally less expensive than container gardens (unless you choose a very deep raised bed). Since we use our YUF Custom Soil Mix for all of our raised beds, you can be assured that you’ll have a great growing experience right from day one.

Considerations: This is the smallest size raised bed that we carry. While it is great for those getting started, we recommend selecting a larger or deeper sized bed for ease of maintenance and long term care. Shallow raised beds need a bit more watering and more regular replenishing of fertilizer or organic material from year to year compared to deeper beds.

Add-Ons: If you have a bit more to spend, a trellis for cucumbers and climbing beans or spiral stakes for tomatoes will help to support larger and taller plants. If the 4′ x 4′ size doesn’t appeal to you, we also have a 2′ x 8′ sized raised bed for $485 or a larger 4′ x 8′ size for $710.

Other accessories like garden tools, natural pest control products, and garden tags can also be added on.

Entry Level Plus Gardens $435 - $690

Who We Recommend This For: Raised beds are great for anyone with a flat outdoor surface like a front or back yard, patio, or even driveway. Raised beds allow you to get an instant garden with excellent yields per square foot and minimal maintenance including weeding, interference from harmful pests, and easy harvesting.

What’s Included: For $595, you can choose from either a 4′ x 8′ garden @ 8″ tall or a 2″ x 8″ garden @ 16″ tall.

Advantages: For those who are looking to maximize yields, the 4′ x 8′ garden provides double the surface area for planting compared to the 2′ x 8′ garden. For easier long term maintenance and yields, having a deeper planting area means better moisture retention, more nutrients, and more space for the large plants like full sized carrots to grow and expand into.

Considerations: Raised beds are a great way to get gardening provided you have the space to accommodate their size. Shallow raised beds need a bit more watering and more regular replenishing of fertilizer or organic material from year to year compared to deeper beds.

This is the smallest size raised bed that we carry. While it is great for those getting started, we recommend selecting a larger or deeper sized bed for ease of maintenance and long term care.

Add-Ons: If you have a bit more to spend, a trellis for cucumbers and climbing beans or spiral stakes for tomatoes will help to support larger and taller plants. Additional container gardens can also be added on for special plants or for extra colour or style.

Accessories like garden tools, natural pest control products, and garden tags can also be added on as well.

Who We Recommend This For: This garden is a step up from the $300 In Ground Garden and includes 2 cubic yards of soil. It is designed for those with a sunny area and a goal of maximizing yields per square foot. Homeowners, businesses, and even restaurants can grow bountiful tomatoes, delicious root vegetables, fragrant herbs, and more.

What’s Included: This garden package includes two cubic yards of our YUF Custom Soil Blend along with more transplants and the addition of some garden accessories like trellises and tomato stakes.

Advantages: With the addition of a large volume of excellent soil, you can grow a wide range of produce in a large area. Like in the $300 In-Ground Garden, you don’t have to worry as much about existing  soil conditions, as our custom soil blend is full or organic matter that improves soil structure for both sandy and clay-based soil.

For optimal short- and long-term results, improving the soil is the most effective way to grow great veg which is why the majority of the costs are put towards improving the soil structure.

Considerations: Like the other in-ground garden example, this does not include the cost of labour, which can potentially double the cost or translate into you spending a weekend or two getting everything setup. This plan also assumes having a plan in terms of what you want to grow, how to layout the garden, and having adequate tools like shovels, garden forks, rakes, and shears.

One option is to invest in only one cubic yard of soil, and use the rest of the budget to invest in labour to help with the setup of the garden and/or the garden plan.

As before, if you plan on moving in the short term, you can’t take the garden with you when you move (although you can use it as a selling feature).

Cost Breakdown
2 Cubic yards of YUF Custom Soil Blend $470
Seeds/plants $60-100
2 Large Trellises @ $60 each
Bamboo or Metal Tomato Stakes: $10-30
Total Cost: $690

Who We Recommend This For: For those looking to get a bit more out of the garden and increase the plant options, the additional $300 gives flexibility to start to customize the boxes according to your specifications. We again recommend this for anyone who wants to get started quickly and easily. It’s perfect for those with a small space such as condo/apartment balconies and fits just as well in larger spaces like backyard decks, patios, rooftop terraces, and even along a sunny driveway.

What’s Included: This setup includes 4 EarthBoxes along with potting soil and transplants, as well as 3 Staking Systems and 1 Garden Stand.

Staking Systems allow you to grow taller and climbing plants like cucumbers, tomatoes, peas, and climbing beans. The Garden Stand elevates the EarthBox so you don’t have to bend down to harvest.

Advantages: The additional $300 gives flexibility to start to customize the boxes according to your specifications. If you don’t want to bend down to harvest, invest in the garden stands. If you love tomatoes and cucumbers, invest the extra money into staking systems that will support the plants as they grow.

Considerations: 4 EarthBoxes don’t take up a lot of space so this garden can fit almost anywhere. Like the $200 version, there isn’t a whole lot that can go wrong. Root vegetables and larger crops like squash aren’t as recommended to grow in the boxes.

Add Ons
If you have a bit more to spend, we recommend adding on extra boxes and the Automatic Watering System. The Automatic Watering System (AWS) is perfect for people who forget or don’t have time to water (ex. if out of town for extended periods of time). The AWS keeps the boxes perfectly watered without batteries or electricity.

Cost Breakdown:
4x EarthBox Organic Garden Kit @ $75 each
Potting Soil and Transplants for boxes $20 each
3 Staking Systems @ $55 each
1 Garden Stand @ $50
Total Cost: $500 + HST

Who We Recommend This For: This garden is designed for those who want to grow delicious produce and where space is at a premium. For those with a small balcony or those who don’t want their garden to take up too much space, this is an excellent choice as half the planters will sit on the ground level and the other half of the planters will be mounted onto a railing.

What’s Included: In this package, we’ve included 2 of the EarthBox self-watering planters along with 2 of the large Balconera planters with railing mounting straps.

Advantages: We love both of these types of planters as they make edible gardening fun and simple. The EarthBoxes will sit at ground level and are excellent for maximum yields. The Balconera planters have a more trendy look with both a woven wicker design and a flat styling. This makes it great for herbs, edible flowers, and other ornamental plants. We also carry the Balconera in a wider range of colours.

Considerations: For the Balconera planters, there are a few situations where the railing mounting straps/brackets will not be compatible with all railings. Additional or alternative methods may need to be used.

We’ve also found that when people get the gardening “bug”, there is a desire to keep on gardening and growing new things and these four containers won’t be enough to grow everything they want.

Add-Ons: There are many other planters we can suggest to add onto this combination including the Nido hanging planter, Classico round planter, and Cascada. Additional Balconera or EarthBoxes can also be added along with EarthBox accessories.

Cost Breakdown:
2x EarthBox Organic Garden Kit @ $75 each
2x Large Balconera Planters @ 81 each
Potting Soil and Transplants @ $20 per planter
2x Balconera Railing Mounting Straps: $35 each
Total Cost: $462 + HST

$700+ Gardens

When it comes to gardens over $700, there are many more options to mix and match according to your individual specifications. Your budget, lifestyle, sun and space constraints, and personal preferences will influence your garden decision and we recommend that you request a consultation for more personalized advice.

Ultimately, we hope to make gardening a fun and rewarding activity. Mother nature sometimes throws us a few curveballs every year and we can’t guarantee that these will be the best choices for you.

Nevertheless, there is so much to enjoy from the garden including spending time outdoors, spending time with family, connecting with mother nature, getting out from behind the computer screen, and the satisfaction of eating a meal produced with food from your own garden.
