Over the holidays, if you purchase a live Christmas tree as part of your holiday decorations, or use evergreen boughs as part of a holiday urn decoartion, don’t just leave these at the curb for municipal pickup. Instead, cut off some of the branches and use them as a protective mulch on top of your vegetable garden bed. It will help to keep the soil insulated from the elements over the winter and deter animals (and people) from walking in your garden.

Remove in the spring and add to your compost pile.
