On Friday March 6th, we took the first trip to our partner greenhouse to start the first round of our seeds for the 2014 growing season. Along with our friends at Cultivate Toronto, we enjoyed our first taste of summer in a greenhouse that felt like it was in the high 20s. The sun was shining, and even the outside weather cooperated with temperatures rising about freezing for the first time in what felt like a very long time.
In our climate, our first seeding trip is always timed with the beginning of March. At this time, we start varieties which typically need the longest growing time to produce the best yields in our relatively short frost-free outdoor growing season. That means peppers, eggplant, green onions, leeks, and shallots get to be some of the first seeds to germinate for us this season.
We also started some fast-growing spinach which will be transplanted out into a few cold frames once the snow melts and ground starts to thaw out after an especially cold winter.
We’re blessed with access to prime real estate to start our seeds an a professional greenhouse environment.
