SPIN farming is a technique for growing high quality vegetables in a space and time efficient way. It is an acronym that stands for Small Plot INtensive and was developed by Wally Satzewitch in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and advertises itself as a way to generate $50,000 in total sales from a half acre (~2000sq meters) of land growing common vegetables like carrots, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, etc.

The main principles behind SPIN farming are standardized beds 2′ x 25′ long, fast cropping relays (multiple crops from the same bed each season), focus on high value crops, highly regimented harvesting techniques and to sell these profitably for the farmer.

For urban farmers, there is a lot to like from these methodologies, which focus on high value activities that minimize wasting time, wasting effort, while producing high quality, delicious crops. We like how it is a tested methodology that lays out in detailed steps a practical approach to all aspects of an urban farming business. It is a flexible and adaptable approach to people with various budgets, growing experience, and time commitment and something we look to for inspiration for many of our crops and work methodologies.
