Radishes are a great spring and fall crop that mature quickly and produces spicy and zesty bulbs. Like all vegetables, there are different varieties and sizes when it comes to radishes.
The most common radishes that we see are the small red and round varieties. These grow best in the cooler weather of spring or fall, with succession planting over a few weeks to stagger the harvest. Examples of the smaller radishes include sora and easter egg, and french breakfast.
Less common are the larger and longer winter radishes. These are more oval and oblong in shape of which the most common is the daikon or Chinese white radish. These radishes grow better in hot weather with long days as they avoid cracking, bolting, and turning too spicy when compared to the smaller radish varieties.
A third type of radish is the oilseed radish which is most commonly used as a cover crop and can be used to help break up heavy soils.
