On Friday April 3, we made our third scheduled trip up to the greenhouse to start some more of our seeds. It was a rainy and dreary day, but with the warmth of the greenhouse, the sight of our young seedlings and even a few budding flowers ,we stayed dry and our spirits were lifted.
At this time of year, around 4 weeks before the last historic frost date for Toronto, we started a variety of kale, swiss chard, calendula, some extra basil, and some of our superfood varieties like wild arugula, and italian red dandelion.
We were able to check up on all of our seeds from the previous visits and it looks like we have an over 90% germination rate and healthy, vigorous seedlings that will be strong and ready to get planted as soon as the weather is a bit warmer.
Finally, we brought back a bit of early spinach that will be transplanted into some cold frames and under some row covers in the next week or two. As the weather continues to warm up, the ground starts to dry up from the recent snow and ice melt, we’ll be ready to start some of our early garden setups.
Before we know it, the hectic month of May will be here and we’ll be out getting all of our gardens planted again.
Until next time, happy gardening!
